Last night, my cat was prowling outside. Suddenly, a robin darted into the dim sky. I
watched in astonishment as my cat leaped four feet into the air to catch the frightened bird in his jaws. It was amazing to see him as such a ferocious predator. Although I was sad to see the robin die, I was again reminded why I like cats. They are such fantastical creatures who make such interesting pets. I would much rather have a regal cat for a pet than a silly dog since cats are so self-reliant and are uniquely playful.
It is clear that having a cat for a pet is better because cats are more independent and can take care of themselves. For instance, cats can be left alone in the house with food, water and a litterbox for several days if the owner needs to travel. However, if a dog owner has to travel, she would need to arrange for someone to board her dog or have someone come over to walk or feed the animal, but this is not the case for a cat. Furthermore, cats can feed themselves when left to their own devices since they can hunt birds or mice. For this reason, cats are better pets for people who are on the go since they do not have to make many accomodations for their pet when traveling. If someone wants a pet who can take care of itself than a cat would be a good choice.
It's true that some people think that dogs make better pets because they are more playful. According to my student Rogelio, he can play fetch or tug-of-war with an old shirt with his dog . However, I disagree with dogs being more playful because cats love to play with their prey. For instance, my cat loves to catch mice and play with them before finally killing them. He will capture a mouse, release it and watch it run away to only catch and release it again until eventually the mouse dies. Cats can be just as playful as dogs, but just in a different way.
Given these points, for someone who travels frequently or is very busy, a cat is a perfect pet. They can be left for a few days without much care. And, upon returning home, the cat owner will usually find a few “presents,” like bird feathers or mice intestines, left on her doorstep by her lovely cat. One should definitely consider owning a cat if one likes to keep life interesting.
