  1. I think that the most important theme in this book is the "Love" between family. I think this because in Orbiting Jupiter , Joseph’s father threatens to kidnap Jack if Joseph doesn’t go with him. However, the author, Gary Schmidt, writes, " "No" said Joseph. "No. Dad I'm coming let's go" (175). This show that Joseph went with his father because he cared about Jack and didn’t want him to be taken away. Another example is when Schmidt tells us, "They weren't ten seconds out of the yard before my father had the police on the phone" (176). This shows that Jack’s father really loves Joseph because Joseph has always been with his foster family and they always support him. They didn’t want to lose Joseph.

  2. The most important theme in Orbiting Jupiter is second chances. I think this because Joseph wanted a second chance to see his daughter. The author, Gary schmidt, says “I there were angels, then bad things wouldn’t happen” (112). This shows that Joseph wants help to find Jupiter. For example Joseph was wondering why the angels didn’t help him when he needed help. Joseph’s foster family always helped him and they understood his pain, and they also told him they would help find Jupiter. That was him getting second chance.

  3. The most important theme of Orbiting Jupiter is acceptance, because you have to accept the person in order to know who he/she really is.The author,Gary Schmidt, states, “We’ve talked this over”,said my mother.”We already know”although Mrs.stroud told Jack’s family all the bad things that Joseph had done, but they still accept Joseph. Mrs. Stroud told Jack’s family that he had almost killed a teacher, had daughter, and he had been to stone mountain. All of this didn't change Jack’s family mind to have Joseph come live with them. This is perfect example of acceptance.

  4. I think that the most important theme/ topic in Orbiting Jupiter is a family love, because family is who stands with you when your need help. The author, Gary Schmidt, writes, “my mother standing behind Joseph, with her hands on his shoulders. Joseph crying. His face all wet “ [172] . This shows that Joseph’s foster family have his back when his father came to take him. The author also states “Joseph stood up. My father held his arm. “ In the truck”, his father said again” [174] . This shows that Joseph’s father is forcing his foster family to give him Joseph. When Jack’s father held Joseph his arm he was trying to protect him, because that's how they show family love.

  5. I think that the theme topic is family love because Joseph's foster family is helping him reunite with Jupiter and they are there when Joseph needs them. The author, Gary Schmidt, tells us "'someday, Jupiter would love to do this'”(169). Then his father looked at him and finally says ‘yes she will’ and that night Jack’s parents talk in the room, maybe about bringing home Jupiter to live with them. They make one call or two. This shows that the foster family of Joseph is there when he needs them, even though they are not his real family. In another part of the book that shows family love is when the Joseph’s father comes back and he wants Joseph to go with him, but what he really wants is the money that Joseph gets every month.
When Joseph’s father says, “‘you’re in this for the money” (129), he accuses Jack’s father of being greedy. However, Jack’s father gets a bank statement from a kitchen draw and says, “You see your name [Joseph]?The account is in your name. That money is yours. We haven’t taken a dime. It’s for you’”(129). This shows that his foster family just wants the best for him. A better life that that a college education can provide. He can care for himself, have a home and one day he can fight for Jupiter.

  6. The most important theme in Orbiting Jupiter is family love. I think this because Joseph's father doesn't care and help him, but his foster family helps him and they are always there to support him. He never got any love from his family especially from his dad. Joseph's dad abuses and hurts him. I’ve never seen someone like Joseph’s dad who doesn't care for his child but cares only for money. Joseph's Foster family has a big responsibility of being his parents because they understand Joseph and they try to help to solve his problems. They showed a lot love to Joseph. For example, The author, Gary Schmidt, writes, “probably she wasn't sure either. She ended up hugging him. And my father did too’’ (162). Joseph was nowhere to be found and when they found him his foster parents didn't ask him where he was, but they gave Joseph hugs. This show how much love Joseph got from his foster family.

  8. I think the most important theme in Orbiting Jupiter is family love. This is my opinion because Joseph’s new family loves him since they saved the foster money that they got from the government by taking care of Joseph for his college. For example, the author, Gary Schmidt, writes “This is a printout from the bank. It shows checks being put into an account every month, starting here, the first month you came to us. You see? And there’s the balance in the account, every single one of the checks added up together. You see that too?” Joseph nodded. “Now look here. You see your name? The account is in your name. That money is yours. We haven’t taken a dime. It’s for you” (126). This shows that Joseph’s foster family genuinely loves joseph by being generous. They don’t think about themselves, but only about Joseph’s futures. In addition, Schmidt added “Joseph is going to college whether you like it or not even the teacher said so“ (126). Therefore, this book is all about family love and having each other's back.
